Thinking of Others During Nurse's Week
Irving, Texas – May 2010 Members of the Nurse Practice Council of Las Colinas Medical Center chose a new way to celebrate Nurse’s Week this year. Instead of exchanging gifts amongst themselves, they decided to pool their contributions and donate to Irving Cares. The Nurse Practice Council has representatives from each unit at the hospital, and many members met with staff and board members of Irving Cares to make the check presentation for $2,500.
Wearing her Texans Helping Texans badge commemorating the effort, Sharon Ikeler, Chief Nursing Officer, and she said, “We refer patients to Irving Cares frequently. The services you provide are a great resource for Irving residents when they are in need, and we really like how you offer ways for patients to ultimately help themselves.”
“We at LCMC appreciate so much what you do for the community, and our Nurse Practice Council was proud to make the presentation on behalf of the nurses at Las Colinas Medical Center. We are continuing this focus on giving instead of receiving,” said Owen DeWitt, Director of Marketing.
“We are very proud this gift, and we’re thankful for the selfless actions of the Nurse Practice Council. The programs at Irving Cares are experiencing tremendous growth, a 21% increase in families served over last year. It’s only with support like this that we’ll be able to meet the demand of Irving residents,” said Teddie Story, Irving Cares Executive Director.
About Irving Cares:
Ensuring that the most basic human needs are met is an important measure of a city’s quality of life. It is what Irving citizens believed when they founded Irving Cares 52 years ago, and it is still true today.
Since 1957, Irving Cares has offered a hand up, not a handout, for Irving families in crisis. The agency served more than 30,000 people in the community last year, and the need continues to increase. Irving Cares promotes client self-sufficiency providing a food pantry, limited financial assistance for rent, mortgage, utilities, and prescriptions; employment services; transportation to medical facilities and prescription deliveries, and information and referral.
